Why does my yard hold water after it rains?
Standing water is a symptom with six common causes: ground falling toward the house, roof water released at the foundation, a low area with no outfall, subsurface water surfacing on a slope, runoff arriving from an upslope property, or compacted soil that will not accept water. They look alike and need different corrections.

Watch the property during rain rather than after it. Where water first appears, where it travels and where it stops identifies the cause far more reliably than the standing water left behind.
Then check four things in order: does the ground fall away from the house on all sides; where does every downspout actually discharge; is the wet area lower than its surroundings or on a slope; and does it stay wet in dry weather. Those four answers separate the six causes almost completely.
Surface water should be gone within a few hours of rain stopping. Ground holding visible water more than about a day after ordinary rain has a drainage problem rather than a heavy-rain problem.
Several causes frequently occur together, which is why a single-system proposal made without an assessment tends to address part of the problem and leave the rest.
